Episode Notes

Coffee with a purpose! This week on a brand new episode of Long Story Short presented by Vistaprint, our host Carla Marie got a chance to speak with Margaret Nyamumbo, the CEO and founder of Kahawa 1893, a coffee company with a mission. Their goal is to close the gender gap within the coffee industry and empower women everywhere. Born in Kenya as a third-generation coffee farmer, Margaret grew up spending much of her time on her grandfather’s coffee farm before moving to the United States. After graduating with an MBA from Harvard, she was working on Wall Street before rediscovering her passion for coffee. Did you know East Africa is considered the birthplace of coffee? Coffee beans were first grown in Kenya in 1893 and despite producing less than 1% of all the coffee in the world, it has the reputation for being some of the best you can get. But it does come at a price. Currently, over 90% of the labor in the coffee industry in Kenya is entirely made up of women who are not fairly compensated because they do not own the land. Kahawa 1893 is trying to change that, not only by supporting these women but by taking action and doing something to create positive change in the coffee world. And this hasn’t gone unnoticed. Roasting and distributing their beans from San Francisco, California, Kahawa 1893 became the first black and woman-owned coffee brand to launch in the Trader Joe’s grocery chain at all of their California locations. In this episode of Long Story Short, Carla Marie chats with Margaret about the story behind the success of building her own business and how you can create customers who are passionate advocates for your brand! They also discuss how to make each and every interaction count and use word of mouth marketing to your advantage.
